AbstractThe evolution of the Web is not only accompanied by an increasing diversity of multimedia but by new requirements towards intelligent research capabilities, user specific assistance, intuitive user interfaces and platform independent information presentation. To reach these and further upcoming requirements new standardized Web technologies and XML based description languages are used. The Web Information Space has transformed into a Knowledge marketplace where worldwide located participants take part into the creation, annotation and consumption of knowledge. This paper points out the design of semantic retrieval frameworks and a prototype implementation for audio and video annotation, storage and retrieval using the MPEG-7 standard and semantic web reference implementations. MPEG-7 plays an important role towards the standardized enrichment of multimedia with semantics on higher abstraction levels and a related improvement of query results.
